BJ Callaghan is officially in place as the second permanent head coach in Nashville SC history.
The former US Men’s National Team assistant took charge on Monday morning, taking over a Nashville team at their lowest point as a club. After a club-record six consecutive losses, the Coyotes find themselves in 12th place in the Eastern Conference table, well behind their typical pace and in real danger of missing the postseason for the first time ever.
Callaghan doesn’t have an easy task in front of him. There are no quick fixes, and while it’s possible he comes in and immediately turns things around, it’s much more plausible to expect him to need several months and a couple transfer windows to get Nashville out of this rut.
With that being said, there are a couple issues that can and should be immediately addressed to give Nashville a bit of life down the stretch.
1. Improve the midfield
Nashville have already partially addressed this in the transfer window, bringing in Australian international Patrick Yazbek to add some much-needed aggression to the midfield. That will help. The return of Randall Leal from injury should also help, although after playing just 555 minutes in the last calendar year, it’s no guarantee that he can stay healthy long enough to truly contribute.
