2024 in review
Joey Skinner came into 2024 with hopes of challenging for a first team spot, but unfortunately sustained an injury in preseason that kept him out of all fixtures until late May. Once he got back, he made appearances in 15 of Huntsville’s final 18 games, while also being in the matchday squad for each of interim head coach Rumba Munthali’s final nine games in charge. He made his first two MLS appearances on the year as well.
Not only this, but he started 10 of those games as well. He became a constant presence, and thankfully had no further injury woes to note for the rest of the season. He again showed flashes, but frankly nothing we haven’t seen from him before.
Moment of the season
On July 3rd, Joey Skinner made his Nashville SC debut on the road in a 2-0 loss to Columbus Crew. It felt earned, he’d been in each of Nashville’s four prior squads up to that point, and would also be in the next four. He’d make his only other Nashville appearance 17 days later on July 20th in a 3-0 loss, again on the road, to Philadelphia Union.
Looking forward
Exactly two weeks after Skinner returned to the fold for Huntsville, the club acquired Jordan Knight from Columbus Crew 2. While both would split minutes with one another, Knight, at least by the eye test, appeared to get involved in the attack a bit more often, and with better results than Skinner.
What was perhaps telling in terms of their respective futures was that Skinner made no further matchday squads after BJ Callaghan took charge, while Knight made appearances in each of Callaghan’s first two games as head coach.
This was confirmed when Nashville SC announced their end-of-year roster decisions on Monday, and Skinner’s 2025 club option was declined.
