NASHVILLE, TN – Nashville SC bolstered their midfield on Friday, signing free agent midfielder Ján Greguš to a one year contract with a club option for 2024.
Greguš, 32, came to MLS in 2019, signing for Minnesota United as a Designated Player. In three seasons with the Loons, Greguš made 67 appearances, scoring three goals and assisting 19. He spent 2022 with the San Jose Earthquakes after being taken in Stage 2 of the Re-Entry Draft, and made 27 appearances for the Quakes, assisting six goals.
At the international level, Greguš has made 36 appearances for Slovakia, including matches in Euro 2016 and Euro 2020. Greguš has four goals and five assists for the Falcons.
“We are excited to be able to add Ján to our group,” said General Manager Mike Jacobs in the club’s statement. “He’s someone our staff has been a fan of since watching him play for Minnesota United when he first entered MLS as well as for his country, and believe he fits into what we look for in a player in that role on and off the field. His range of passing and playmaking out of midfield make him a welcome addition.”
Greguš already has connections to Nashville SC. In addition to training with the club for the past few weeks, he played against reigning MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar seven times during their time in Denmark, including in the 2017 Danish Cup final, which Greguš’s Copenhagen won 3-1. In the seven total meetings between Copenhagen and Brøndby in which they both played, Greguš won five and lost two.
Greguš adds immediate starting quality to Nashville SC and potentially more attacking threat. Since the start of 2020, Greguš has 11 assists. Dax McCarty, Sean Davis and Aníbal Godoy have combined 20 assists in that same stretch.
Greguš is eligible to make his Nashville debut tomorrow, with the ‘Yotes taking on New England Revolution on Saturday at 6:30 pm CT at Gillette Stadium.
