NASHVILLE, TN - Nashville SC announced a surprising move on Thursday minutes before the 2021 MLS SuperDraft began, sending midfielder Derrick Jones to Houston Dynamo in return for $100,000 in 2021 General Allocation Money and $150,000 in 2022 GAM.
Jones, 23, played in 18 of Nashville’s 26 matches last season. The natural midfielder largely played as an no. 10, even filling in as a forward when Nashville went through an injury crisis. Jones contributed one assist in 2020.
Nashville originally acquired Jones from Philadelphia Union in the summer of 2019 for $175k in GAM, where he played a handful of matches around an injury for Nashville’s USL side, including a memorable solo goal in the playoffs.
It’s an interesting move for Nashville, who used Jones heavily last season. Jones also occupied a homegrown roster spot, minimizing his hit to Nashville’s roster budget, as well as allowing them to maintain all of his transfer fee should he be sold outside the league.
